MARCH INTO NEW THIS MONTH WITH STORIES AND UPDATES ABOUT CMTN!
DID YOU READ? INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: A CELEBRATION OF THE FEMALE INTERNATIONAL
STUDENT COMMUNITY’S RESILIENT SPIRIT
On International Women’s Day (March 8), Coast Mountain College (CMTN) put a spotlight on our adventurous, strong-willed, and independent female international student community. Jam Perolino (Philippines), Judith Ogoegbulem (Nigeria), Giuditta Salsi (Italy), and Palak Sidhu (India) share their stories of struggle and success as they manage student, work, and family life in a foreign country.

Jam and Judith have two things in common: one, they had left their countries to pursue education in Canada; and two, they both had their children while studying at the college. Jam, a first-time mom, admits to still adapting to her new life, but is grateful for the gift of her son. The second-year student says, “I am just taking things one day at a time, utilizing every bit of time efficiently, and appreciating each
small win in my daily struggle.”

Judith, a first-year student and mother of two, agreed that time-management and flexibility are crucial for juggling both student and family life. When asked how she cares for a toddler and a baby while managing to attend her business classes, she explains, “It requires continual balancing and compromise, but my determination and resilience drive me forward.”

Whether raising a child or living alone for the first time, allowing oneself to be open to changes and new experiences in a foreign country can be rewarding, as first-year student Giuditta attests to. Her adventurous nature, she says, made her decide to pack her things and experience Canada for herself. “I believe that each new place has its own story to tell, and I am eager to listen and learn from the diverse
perspectives that I encounter,” Giuditta says.

Culture shock and loneliness, however, can hit even the strongest and most adventurous of people. Second-year student Palak would sometimes long for home, but remembering her father’s words would bring back her sense of motivation. Palak explains, “He always said that things are hard when you think of them as hard, and even harder when you do not have faith in yourself. Trusting my power is the key which motivates me to be a better version of myself every day.”
These four ladies are just a few among our many resilient female international students across different campuses, each with her own unique background and story to tell. Which is why, in all days of the year, CMTN is committed to supporting our international students and promoting a safe and diverse community that accommodates all genders and backgrounds.
DID YOU KNOW? NEWEST CMTN DIGITAL AMBASSADOR IS EXCITED TO STUDY IN “ONE OF THE MOST SPECTACULAR PLACES ON EARTH”
My name is Oluwaseyi Awopetu, and I am from Nigeria. I am in my first year of the Post Degree Diploma Business Program at Coast Mountain College in Prince Rupert, BC. Studying at Coast Mountain College means I can study, work, and play in one of the most spectacular places on Earth, as Canada is a place rich in history and culture.
Prince Rupert is an intimate and connected community that enjoys strong social and community bonds thanks to its many service offerings and thriving arts scene.

I have fallen in love with CMTN Prince Rupert because the staff are warm and welcoming. They are approachable and always willing to help and point you in the right direction.
I choose to live life and enjoy everything it has to offer because I have lived all my life in big buzzing cities. Prince Rupert is a great place to golf, fish, hike, and see beautiful nature.
DID YOU KNOW? BC GOVERNMENT REQUIRES PROVINCIAL ATTESTATION LETTERS FOR STUDY PERMIT APPLICATIONS
As of January 22, 2024, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has implemented a new requirement for study permit applications called provincial attestation letters (PAL). This requirement applies to most new international students who have yet to apply for their study permit to Canada. To check if you need a PAL for your application, visit the official Government of Canada website.
BC Government’s PAL Issuing System Goes Live, Provides PALs to Study Permit Applicants
Effective March 4, 2024, BC’s system responsible for the provision of PALs to applicants to the province is now live. Students who will be issued a letter of acceptance from CMTN will automatically be issued
a PAL, which will be included in their program acceptance package. Applicants are required to attach a letter of acceptance, PAL, and other necessary documents to their study permit application online through the IRCC portal.
As part of regulating the international student cap, IRCC now requires most incoming international students to submit a PAL along with their student permit applications. The PAL serves as proof that the applicant has been included in a provincial or territorial allocation under the national cap.
